The Mini Countryman battery is 12 V, almost always AGM, and it must be registered to the car's computer: the F60 Countryman (2017 onwards) comes with AGM as standard, 70-90 Ah and 680-850 A, plus a battery sensor (IBS) on the negative terminal, so a new battery has to be coded in; the earlier R60 Countryman used a conventional or an EFB battery depending on whether it had Start-Stop, and the plug-in Cooper S E ALL4 uses a 12 V auxiliary battery that powers the electronics but does not crank the engine. On many Countryman the battery sits in the boot, under the floor. The Mini Countryman is the big Mini, a compact SUV you see all over Málaga, in town and on trips along the Costa del Sol. How to tell which one your Countryman needs
Quick trick: look at the negative terminal. If there's a sensor with a connector coming off it (the battery state sensor, IBS), your Countryman manages charging actively and needs AGM plus registration of the new battery to the computer. Almost every F60 has it. And since they come with AGM from the factory, you have to keep AGM: you can move up to a higher-capacity AGM, but never drop from AGM to EFB. The Cooper S E ALL4 is a plug-in hybrid: its 12 V battery is auxiliary, it powers the electronics but does not crank the engine or move the car (the high-voltage battery does that). It's usually an AGM or EFB and it also has to be registered. If that 12 V goes flat, the car won't go to READY even with the traction battery charged; that's why it's worth keeping an eye on it just like on any other Countryman.
How long does a Countryman battery last in Málaga?
4 to 6 years for a conventional battery and 5 to 7 for an EFB or AGM.
