Exide and Tudor batteries in Málaga: a workshop's verdict and when to choose them over Varta
RSS“Are Exide batteries any good?” and “Tudor or Varta?” are two of the questions we hear most often in the shop. Before we answer, an honest disclaimer: we are an Official Varta Distributor in Málaga, so our main brand is Varta. But we also supply Exide and Tudor, we see them in the workshop every day and we have no reason to run them down. In this guide we give you our technical view: who makes them, which ranges are available, how they compare with Varta and how to choose without getting it wrong.
Who makes Exide and Tudor
Exide is one of Europe’s major lead-acid battery manufacturers, with its own technology, independent of the Clarios group, which makes Varta and Bosch. Tudor is a Spanish brand with more than a century of history that became part of the Exide group; that’s why in Spain and Portugal you’ll find equivalent ranges sold under one name or the other. To see how all the brands fit together, read our Varta vs Bosch vs Exide comparison.
Exide and Tudor ranges you’ll come across
- Conventional (lead-acid): for cars without Start-Stop. Exide offers several lines, from entry level to the highest starting power.
- EFB: for basic Start-Stop. It withstands far more start cycles than a conventional battery.
- AGM: for advanced Start-Stop, regenerative braking and cars packed with electronics.
- Commercial vehicles, motorbikes and marine: both brands have dedicated ranges.
It’s exactly the same split as Varta’s: Varta Dynamic EFB and Varta Dynamic AGM. So the first question isn’t “which brand?” but “which technology does my car need?”
Exide and Tudor compared with Varta
| Varta | Exide / Tudor | |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing group | Clarios (same as Bosch) | Exide (independent of Clarios) |
| Technologies | Conventional, EFB, AGM | Conventional, EFB, AGM |
| Performance with the same technology and capacity | Very similar: the difference comes down to technology, size and how the car is used | |
| At Málaga Baterías | Official Distributor, always in stock | We supply them: we confirm availability from your number plate |
Our view from the workshop
After many years of changing batteries in Málaga, what we see is that the brand is almost never the cause of a premature failure. Batteries that die early do so, in this order, because of:
- The wrong technology: a conventional battery in a car with Start-Stop, or an EFB where the manufacturer specifies AGM.
- Heat: Málaga summers speed up internal wear in any brand. AGM batteries cope better.
- Short journeys: the alternator doesn’t have time to recharge, so the battery lives half-flat.
- An unregistered battery: in cars with a charge sensor, if the new battery isn’t coded, the car charges it incorrectly.
With the same technology, the same capacity and correct fitting, an Exide, a Tudor and a Varta perform very similarly. We recommend Varta because it’s the brand we always have in stock and the one we handle directly as an official distributor, which makes any warranty claim quicker. But if your car came with an Exide or a Tudor from the factory and you’d like the same again, we’ll source it for you.
When to choose each one
- Choose Varta if you need the car today: we keep the full car range in stock and fit it on the spot, no appointment needed.
- Choose Exide or Tudor if you want to keep your car’s original brand or your usual garage recommends it; we’ll confirm availability from your number plate.
- Either way, never downgrade the technology: if your car has AGM, the new battery must be AGM, whatever the brand.
How to choose without getting it wrong
- Check the label on your current battery: capacity (Ah), cold cranking amps (A EN) and technology (EFB or AGM).
- Check the size, height and polarity: a battery that doesn’t fit is no use, even with the right amps.
- If your car has Start-Stop or is mid-range or premium, ask whether the battery needs registering.
- If in doubt, send us your number plate: we’ll identify the exact reference in Varta, Exide or Tudor.

Frequently asked questions
Are Exide batteries any good?
Yes. Exide is one of Europe's major battery manufacturers, with its own technology, independent of the group that makes Varta and Bosch. With the same technology (conventional, EFB or AGM) and the same capacity, its performance is very similar to Varta's.
Are Tudor and Exide the same brand?
Tudor is a Spanish brand with more than a century of history that is now part of the Exide group. That's why they share technology, and in Spain and Portugal you'll find equivalent ranges sold under one name or the other.
Which battery lasts longer, Varta or Exide?
With the same technology, the same capacity and correct fitting, their lifespan is very similar. What shortens a battery's life most in Málaga is fitting the wrong technology, the heat, short journeys and not registering the new battery on cars that require it.
