When to replace your battery: 7 clear signs
RSSA battery warns before it dies: slow crank, dim lights, erratic electrics, age over 4 years, swelling, visible sulphation, and SoH below 60% on a tester. Spotting 2-3 of these while still working = replace before you get stranded.
Batteries rarely die suddenly; they give 2-4 weeks of warning. Recognising the signs avoids the tow truck.
The 7 signs
- Slow cranking: engine takes 1-2 seconds longer, especially when cold. The clearest sign.
- Dim or flickering lights: idle headlights or weak dashboard indicators show insufficient charge.
- Erratic electrics: infotainment resets, locking glitches, radio loses memory. Usually unstable voltage.
- Age over 4 years: average life in Málaga (warm climate) is 3-5 years. Past 4, plan a swap even if cranking is fine.
- Visible swelling: side walls bulging means overcharge or internal sulphation. Explosion risk, immediate replacement.
- White/green sulphate on terminals: severe oxidation reduces contact. Clean with baking soda + water; if it returns within weeks, the battery is at end of life.
- SoH below 60% on tester: with a professional Midtronics meter we measure State of Health. Below 60% will not reliably start in winter.

- SoH: % of remaining health.
- Measured vs nominal CCA.
- Internal resistance.
- Open-circuit voltage.
With those four data points we honestly tell you if you need a swap or another year is fine.
