Which batteries your buggy or trolley takes

A buggy runs on a set of batteries wired in series that add up to 36 or 48 V. An electric golf trolley runs on a single 12 V battery.

How to tell which one you have

Lift the seat and count the batteries. Then count the filler caps on one of them: each cap is one 2 V cell.

• 3 caps: 6 V battery.
• 4 caps: 8 V battery.
• 6 caps: 12 V battery.

Multiply the voltage of one battery by the number of batteries and you have the buggy’s system voltage. Sealed batteries (AGM, gel or lithium) have no caps: the voltage is printed on the label. We supply batteries for vehicles such as Club Car, EZ-GO or Yamaha, and we always confirm the configuration from the buggy’s data plate or from the batteries currently fitted.

For trolleys, what matters is the size of the battery tray and the connector. These batteries belong to the same family as those used in wheelchairs and mobility scooters: 12 V, sealed and deep cycle.

Flooded lead-acid, AGM/gel or lithium

All three technologies work in a buggy as long as they are deep-cycle batteries.

Flooded lead-acid is the most affordable way in and lasts well if you look after it. Lithium costs more up front, but it saves weight, needs no watering and copes better with long idle spells. Before switching from lead to lithium, you need to check that the charger and the buggy’s electronics accept it.

Signs that the set is worn out

• Fewer holes per charge: you used to complete the whole round and now you only just make it.
• It loses power on hills, even if it still runs fine on the flat.
• One battery gets hot or loses water far more than the others: that is usually the one failing.
• Swollen cases or heavily corroded terminals.

Why they are all replaced at once

The batteries in a buggy work in series: the same current flows through all of them and the set performs only as well as its weakest battery. If you fit one new battery alongside five worn ones, the new one charges and discharges at the pace of the old ones and ages in no time.

That is why we quote for the complete set, with batteries of the same brand, model and capacity.

Why car batteries will not do

A starter battery is built to deliver a lot of current for a few seconds and recharge straight away. A buggy asks for the opposite: moderate current for a long time and deep discharges every day. Treated like that, a car battery fails in no time. You need deep-cycle or traction batteries.

The maintenance that extends battery life most

• Distilled water, after charging. Top up once charging has finished, without overfilling. If the plates are exposed, cover them just enough beforehand. Never use tap water.
• Charge after every use, even if you only played a few holes. Lead-acid does not like being left half charged.
• Clean, tight terminals. A loose or corroded terminal heats up and costs you range.
• Do not run it until it stops. The deeper the discharge, the fewer cycles the set will give.

If the buggy sits unused for months

This is common with second homes: the buggy stays in the garage for half the season. Before you leave, charge it fully, check the water level and set the switch to the tow or storage position if your model has one. If the charger is automatic and maintains the charge, it can stay connected; if it is not, ask someone to recharge it every few weeks.

A lead-acid battery left discharged for months sulphates and cannot be recovered, and in the summer heat it self-discharges faster. Lithium batteries cope better with the wait: follow the manufacturer’s instructions for storage.

Buggies on residential estates and country properties on the Costa del Sol

Many buggies never touch a golf course. They are used to get around the estate, go down to the beach or work on a country property. The use is different, with short trips, slopes and heavier loads, but the batteries are the same.
