Finding the right battery for your UTV or buggy
Start with the reference. On many models it is a Japanese JIS code – YTX14-BS and YTX20L-BS are common ones – while machines that need more capacity take small-car formats. That reference sets the dimensions, terminal layout, voltage (12 V) and capacity. Then look at two numbers: the amp-hours (Ah), which tell you how much energy it stores, and the CCA, the cold cranking current measured at -18 °C, which shows how hard it can turn the starter motor. Give us the make and model of the vehicle, or the reference on the label of the battery you have now, and we will find its equivalent.
To gauge its condition, measure it at rest: 12.6 to 12.8 V means a healthy battery; under 12.4 V it is only partly charged and wants looking at. With the engine running, the charging system ought to deliver 13.8 to 14.7 V. Two further factors weigh on these vehicles: constant shaking away from the tarmac and, on work UTVs, the draw from the winch, spotlights, radio and other accessories, which means going up in capacity.
Technologies available for side-by-sides and UTVs
- Conventional SLI in “freshpack” form: lead-acid that leaves the factory dry and is filled with acid only when it goes into service, so it starts life at full capacity. Suits leisure buggies and UTVs with little electrical kit on board.
- AGM, maintenance-free: the electrolyte is held in a glass-fibre mat, which makes it sealed, good at shrugging off vibration and more tolerant of repeated charge and discharge. It is what we advise if you genuinely go off-road or if your UTV runs a winch, auxiliary lights and extra loads.
- Lithium (for information only): lighter and delivers current well; you see it in competition and on some recent models. It needs a suitable charger and does not always get on with heat, so ask us first whether your vehicle will take one.

A side-by-side or UTV brings together two enemies of any battery. On one side, the knocks and jolts of broken ground; on the other, on work machines, a heavy and sustained load – the winch pulling, the spotlights on, equipment plugged in. With its electrolyte locked into glass fibre, an AGM cannot spill, absorbs the shaking and recovers better from back-to-back discharges; in this kind of use it is the one that holds out longest. Can the battery take the knocks of the trail?
If it is an AGM, yes: with the electrolyte immobilised in glass fibre it cannot spill and it handles the bumps and shaking of rough ground considerably better than a conventional one. For off-road use it is the most durable choice.
