Which battery does your buggy or UTV need?
A buggy or UTV battery is identified by its reference (many follow the Japanese JIS code, like YTX14-BS or YTX20L-BS, and higher-capacity ones use small-car formats), which defines size, terminals, voltage (12 V) and capacity. The key figures are the capacity in amp-hours (Ah) and the cold cranking current (CCA, measured at -18 °C): the higher the CCA, the more starting power. Tell us the make and model or the reference stuck on the current battery and we will tell you the exact equivalent.
A healthy battery at rest reads between 12.6 and 12.8 V. Below 12.4 V it is partly charged and should be checked; the charging system should return between 13.8 and 14.7 V with the engine running. Bear in mind two things specific to these vehicles: off-road use subjects the battery to strong vibration, and work UTVs usually carry more electronics and accessories (winch, lights, radio) that demand more capacity.
Types of buggy and UTV battery
- Conventional "freshpack" (SLI): a lead-acid battery delivered dry and activated with the acid when fitted, so it arrives at full capacity. A balanced choice for leisure buggies and UTVs with little electronics.
- Maintenance-free AGM: the electrolyte is absorbed in glass fibre, so it is sealed, vibration-resistant and copes better with cycling. The recommended option for real off-road use and for UTVs with a winch, auxiliary lights and higher consumption.
- Lithium (information): lighter and with good discharge, used in competition and some modern models. It requires compatible chargers and is not always the best choice in the heat; we advise you if your vehicle accepts it.
