Which battery does your quad need?
A quad battery is identified by its reference under the Japanese JIS code (for example YTX9-BS, YTX14-BS, YTZ10S…), which defines the size, terminals, voltage (12 V on almost all) and capacity. The key figures are the capacity in amp-hours (Ah) and the cold cranking current (CCA, measured at -18 °C): the higher the CCA, the more starting power. Tell us the make and model of your quad or the reference stuck on the current battery and we will tell you the exact equivalent.
A healthy battery at rest reads between 12.6 and 12.8 V. Below 12.4 V it is partly charged and should be checked; the quad's charging system should return between 13.8 and 14.7 V with the engine running. If the quad cranks weakly after a few days parked, it is almost always the battery. Bear in mind the format is small and compact, and that off-road use subjects the battery to strong vibration and knocks.
Types of quad battery
- Conventional "freshpack" (SLI): a lead-acid battery delivered dry and activated with the acid when fitted, so it arrives at full capacity. Good value for general-use and leisure quads and ATVs.
- Maintenance-free AGM: the electrolyte is absorbed in glass fibre, so it is sealed, vibration-resistant and copes better with cycling and demanding starts. Ideal for quads with more electronics, intensive use, work or competition.
- Lithium (information): lighter and with good discharge, used in competition and some modern models. It requires compatible chargers and is not always the best choice in hot climates; we advise you if your quad accepts it.
