Which batteries each type of platform uses

Nearly all electric platforms run on 24 V or 48 V, and that voltage is reached by wiring several 6 V or 12 V batteries in series. The table shows the most common configurations in the industry. Use it as a guide, not as a basis for ordering blind.

Always confirm it on the machine’s data plate or on the batteries fitted now. We handle batteries for equipment such as Genie, JLG, Haulotte or Skyjack, but within a single make the voltage, capacity and dimensions change from one model to another and from one series to the next. Flooded lead-acid, AGM or gel, or lithium: which suits you

All three technologies work in a platform. The choice depends on where the machine works, who looks after it and how many cycles you put it through in a year.

Flooded traction lead-acid

The classic deep-cycle battery, with caps for topping up distilled water. It withstands many charge and discharge cycles and is the most common choice in hire fleets and on site. In return it needs maintenance: checking the water level and charging in a ventilated place, because it gives off gases while charging.

Maintenance-free AGM or gel

These are sealed: no topping up and no spills. They suit machines that work indoors (warehouses, depots, shopping centres, food industry) or where nobody is going to look after the water. The charger must have the right charging profile; on a flooded profile they wear out early.

Lithium

It weighs less, accepts partial charges between shifts and needs no maintenance. It makes sense for machines in heavy daily use. It is not a straight swap: the charger and the platform’s electronics must be compatible, and the lower weight can affect stability. Before making the move, check with the machine’s manufacturer and tell us about your case.

Why every battery in the pack is replaced at once

In a pack the batteries are wired in series: the same current flows through all of them. Put one new battery next to three worn ones and the old ones fill and empty sooner, leaving the new one permanently undercharged or overcharged. The whole set performs only as well as its weakest battery, and the new one ages at the pace of the old.

That is why a pack is replaced complete, with batteries of the same make, model and capacity. Replacing a single one only makes sense in a nearly new pack where one unit has failed through a defect or a knock. What we need to give you a quote

• System voltage (24 V or 48 V) and the voltage of each battery (6 V or 12 V).
• Number of batteries in the pack.
• Dimensions of one battery: length, width and height including terminals, plus the space available.
• Capacity in Ah and the rate it is stated at on the label (C5, C20…).
• Terminal type and position of the positive.
• Photo of the label on the battery and of the machine’s data plate.

How to make the pack last longer

A traction battery rarely fails overnight: it wears according to how it is used and charged. These routines make the biggest difference.

• Full charge. Let the charger finish its cycle. Repeated interrupted charges sulphate the plates in lead batteries.
• Distilled water. On flooded batteries, check the level regularly and top up after charging, never with tap water and never to the brim.
• No deep discharges. When the machine warns of low battery, it is time to charge. Running it until it stops shortens the pack’s life considerably.
• Clean, tight terminals. A loose or sulphated terminal heats up and costs you running time.
• Long lay-ups. If the platform will be out of work for weeks, store it charged and check the charge every so often.
