What a jet ski asks of its battery
A jet ski is harder on its battery than almost any other vehicle. The battery sits inside a small hull, takes a knock with every wave and spends months without moving.
- Strong starting power. The starter has to turn over a large-capacity engine with the hull in the water. You need the cranking current (A) the manufacturer specifies, and no less.
- Vibration and impacts. Jumps and chop shake the plates. A battery with loosely held plates sheds active material and lasts less.
- Damp and salt. Sea air attacks terminals and connections. Salt deposits add resistance, so the engine cranks slowly even when the battery is healthy.
- Long lay-ups. Out of season the battery discharges by itself. Left flat for weeks, it sulphates and will not recover.
That is the case for a sealed AGM battery. The electrolyte is absorbed in glass-fibre separators, so there is no free liquid to spill if the craft tilts or capsizes. The plates are compressed and cope better with vibration. It never needs topping up and its self-discharge is low, so it handles lay-ups better.

The code on the battery you have
This is the most reliable piece of information. It is printed on the label or moulded into the case: something like YTX20L-BS, YB16CL-B or similar. That code tells us the size, capacity and polarity.
Dimensions and terminal position
Measure the length, width and height in millimetres. The battery tray in a jet ski is tight and the battery is held by a clamp or strap: a few millimetres too many and it will not go in. Note which side the positive terminal is on when you face the battery. Two batteries can be identical in size with the terminals reversed; that is the difference between a YTX20 and a YTX20L, for instance.

YB16CL-B and YTX20L are the most widespread formats in personal watercraft from brands such as Sea-Doo, Yamaha and Kawasaki. Treat that as a guide, not as a fitment list: always confirm against the code on the battery fitted or the manual. We will not tell you «your model takes this one» without checking it with you first.
The YTX20 is the same size as the YTX20L with the polarity reversed. The YTX20CH-BS is shorter and slightly taller. That is why dimensions and terminals decide. You will find the other references in the jet ski batteries category; if yours is not listed, ask for a quote and we will source it.
Collect in Málaga or have it delivered, without fitting

Motorcycle batteries, jet ski batteries included, are sold without fitting: you take it away and fit it yourself or have your mechanic do it. What we do in the shop:
- Test your battery free of charge if you bring it in removed, to see whether it really needs replacing.
- Take back the old battery and recycle it at no cost.
- Hand over the new one with warranty.

Maintenance and winter lay-up
During the season
After every outing, rinse the battery area and terminals with fresh water and dry them. If you see white or greenish powder on the terminals, clean them and tighten the connections: a loose or salt-crusted terminal gives the same symptoms as a dead battery.
When you store it
If the craft will stand idle for several weeks, disconnect the battery, negative terminal first. Better still, take it out and store it charged in a cool, dry place. Connect it to a maintenance charger designed for motorcycle batteries and suitable for AGM: it keeps the battery full without overcharging.

Which battery does my jet ski take?
It depends on the model and the year. The most common formats are YB16CL-B and YTX20L, but there are others. The safe way is to read the code on the battery fitted or check the manual. Send us that code, or the make, model and year, and we will confirm the reference before you buy.
Will an ordinary motorcycle battery work in a jet ski?
Jet skis use batteries from the same family as motorcycles and quads, so the code may well be the same. What matters is that the code, the dimensions, the terminal position and the cranking current all match.
Do you fit jet ski batteries in Málaga?
No. Motorcycle and jet ski batteries are sold without fitting. We hand it over ready for you or your mechanic to install. At the Málaga shop we do test the battery you bring in free of charge and take back the old one for recycling at no cost.
