Types of motorcycle battery and which one you need

Conventional (with acid)

The most economical, for classic bikes and simple mopeds. It requires activation with acid and an initial charge before fitting; without it, the battery never reaches 100%.

AGM / Freshpack

Sealed, maintenance-free and more resistant to vibration. They are the standard for most current motorcycles and scooters. The freshpack is activated with its acid and left to settle before charging.

Gel

Very good resistance to discharges and to the short trips typical of the city, where the battery barely recharges. Ideal for intensive urban use.

Lithium (LiFePO4)

Much lighter (weighing a fraction of a lead one) and with low self-discharge, perfect for a sports motorcycle. It requires a specific lithium charger; it can't be charged with a lead-acid one.

What most often goes wrong: amperage and the activation charge

Two common mistakes when buying a motorcycle battery on your own:

• Fitting more or fewer amps/CCA than the bike requires. A battery with the wrong specification may not start in the cold or may strain the charging system. The correct reference depends on make, model and engine size.
• Fitting it without the initial charge. Many motorcycle batteries leave the factory "dry" or half-charged; if they're fitted without being properly activated and charged, they perform below capacity and last much less.

How long a motorcycle battery lasts in Málaga

Realistically, in Málaga's warm climate: a conventional one 2-4 years, an AGM/gel 4-5 years and a well-maintained lithium one 5-8 years. Heat and short trips (starting and stopping without riding enough to recharge) are what most shorten its life. If your bike sits for weeks, a trickle charger greatly extends the battery.
