Technical guide: how to choose the right motorcycle battery (CCA, AGM, Freshpack)
RSSChoosing the wrong motorcycle battery can damage your ECU, leave you stranded on the first cold start, or cut life to 12 months when it should be 4-5 years. This technical guide explains how to identify the exact reference your bike needs.
The 3 parameters that matter
1. JIS code (e.g. YTX14-BS)
Defines dimensions, capacity, terminals and polarity. Wrong code = doesn't fit, terminals reversed, possible short. Find it on existing battery or in owner manual.
2. Capacity (Ah)
Small urban 50-125cc: 4-7 Ah. Mid 250-600cc: 8-12 Ah. Big >600cc: 12-20 Ah. Never less than original.
3. Cold cranking amps (CCA)
50-300 A depending on engine. Málaga rarely sees -18 °C, so CCA matters less here than in cold climates, but still indicates battery health.
Technologies 2026
- Conventional: caps, refill water. 2-3 years in Málaga. Classic bikes, mopeds.
- Freshpack sealed: acid in separate bottle, activated at install. Most popular. 3-4 years. Varta Powersports Freshpack.
- AGM: glass-mat absorbed. Required on premium bikes (BMW, Ducati, KTM). 4-5 years. Varta Powersports AGM.
- Gel: deep discharge resistant. Harley-Davidson, custom large-displacement. Specific gel charger required.
- Lithium LiFePO4: 1/4 weight, 8-10× lifespan. €200-400 vs €50-120 Freshpack. Circuit sport bikes, customs. Lithium charger required.
Decision table
| Bike type | Technology | Life in Málaga |
|---|---|---|
| 50cc moped | Freshpack | 3-4 y |
| Scooter 125-300cc | Freshpack or AGM | 3-5 y |
| Naked / sport mid | AGM | 4-5 y |
| Premium sport >700cc | AGM or lithium | 4-8 y |
| Harley custom | Gel or lithium | 5-6 y |
| Trail / off-road | AGM | 4-6 y |
| Long-parked bike | Lithium or AGM + maintainer | 5-10 y |
| Circuit sport | Lithium | 5-8 y |
| Quad, jet ski | AGM | 3-5 y |
Common mistakes
- AGM replaced by conventional: 12-18 month life.
- Freshpack installed without absorption wait: 70% capacity.
- Gel/lithium charged with conventional charger: damaged in few cycles.
- Lithium without checking regulator: damage if regulator is out of range.
- Bike parked all winter without maintainer: sulphation in 2-3 months.
FAQ
Can I switch Freshpack to AGM?
Yes if JIS code is equivalent. AGM always superior.
To lithium?
Yes, but check regulator first (13.2-14.4 V).
Why does battery discharge in winter even when new?
Natural self-discharge + parasitic drain (alarm, USB). Solution: intelligent maintainer.
