The Cupra Formentor battery is 12 V and is around 60-80 Ah and 600-800 A depending on the engine: EFB of 60-70 Ah on the 1.5 TSI with Start-Stop and AGM of 70-80 Ah on the 2.0 TSI, the VZ versions and the 1.5 eTSI 48 V mild-hybrid. On the Formentor e-Hybrid the 12 V battery is an auxiliary one: it powers the ignition and the electronics, but it does not crank the engine. As a VAG model with a sensor on the negative terminal, the new battery must be registered in the ECU. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999, we test it free and replace it without an appointment, in about 15 minutes. Indicative prices with fitting included: 130-230 € EFB, 180-280 € AGM and 280-380 € high-end AGM.
The Formentor has been a common sight in Málaga since 2020, and it is a coupé SUV with plenty of electronics on board: a large screen, driver assistance, lighting, permanent Start-Stop and, on the VZ versions, a standby power draw that is hard on the battery. With the heat of the coast, that combination takes its toll sooner than most people expect. We fit the battery in the shop (there is no mobile service), with ECU registration included in the price and no appointment needed, at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.

How to know which one the Formentor needs
A quick trick: open the bonnet and look at the negative terminal. If there is a sensor with a connector coming out of it (the VAG battery state sensor), the Formentor manages charging actively and needs EFB or AGM plus registration of the new battery in the ECU. If it came with AGM from the factory, it must stay AGM: going up from EFB to AGM is fine, but never down from AGM to EFB. And if checking is not an option, just give us the number plate and we will confirm Ah, cranking amps, technology, polarity and exact dimensions. If it is not clear whether the problem is the battery or the alternator, start with a free battery check.

Request a quoteSigns the Formentor battery needs replacing
- Start-Stop stops engaging, or it engages and the engine restarts by itself a few seconds later: the first warning on almost every Formentor.
- Slow or lazy cranking when cold on the 1.5 TSI or the 2.0 TSI, especially first thing in the morning.
- Battery warning light or electrical system message on the digital cluster.
- A battery replaced recently but never registered in the ECU: the car still treats it as the old one, charges it badly and halves its life.
- On the e-Hybrid, the car does not go to READY or even switch on although the high-voltage battery is charged: that is the 12 V auxiliary battery, not the traction one.
- Infotainment screen resets, sound system glitches or ambient lighting faults.
- More than 4 years old. In Málaga an EFB or AGM lasts 5-7 years on average.

Frequently asked questions about the Cupra Formentor battery
Which battery does the Cupra Formentor take and how many amps does it need?
The Cupra Formentor battery is 12 V and is around 60-80 Ah and 600-800 A depending on the engine: EFB of 60-70 Ah on the 1.5 TSI with Start-Stop and AGM of 70-80 Ah on the 2.0 TSI, the VZ versions and the 1.5 eTSI 48 V mild-hybrid. These are indicative values: confirm them free of charge with the number plate at Málaga Baterías, C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga.
How much does it cost to change a Cupra Formentor battery in Málaga?
At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) changing a Cupra Formentor battery costs 130-230 € with EFB, 180-280 € with AGM and 280-380 € with a high-end AGM for the VZ versions, always with fitting included. ECU registration, the prior test and the recycling of the old battery are not charged separately, and the warranty is the one set out in RDL 7/2021.
Does the battery have to be registered in the Formentor ECU?
Yes. The Formentor is a VAG model with a sensor on the negative terminal and active charge management: the system stores the battery history and adapts charging to its ageing. If a new battery is fitted without registering it, the car charges it as if it were the old one and halves its life. We do it with the diagnostic equipment during the same job and at no extra cost.
Which battery does the Formentor e-Hybrid take?
The Formentor e-Hybrid has a 12 V auxiliary battery, usually AGM or EFB, alongside the high-voltage battery. That 12 V battery does not crank the petrol engine and does not move the car: it powers the ignition and the electronics. That is why cranking amps make no sense on this version. If it goes flat, the car will not go to READY even with a full traction battery.
My Formentor has AGM, can I fit an EFB and save money?
No. An AGM can replace an EFB, but never the other way round. If it left the factory with AGM it is because the car has a level of consumption and cycling that an EFB cannot cope with, and on a fully equipped VZ that shows up within months. Saving a few euros there usually costs more the following year.
How long does a Formentor battery last in Málaga?
Between 5 and 7 years for an EFB or an AGM. The heat of the coast evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so batteries here last less on average than in the north of Spain. If yours is over four years old, drop by for the free test: it takes five minutes and costs nothing.
