The Audi A3 battery is 12 V and is around 60-80 Ah and 600-800 A depending on the engine: the A3 8Y (2020-) uses EFB or AGM because every version has Start-Stop —EFB on the entry 30 TFSI and AGM on the TDI engines, the 48 V mild-hybrids and the higher trims—. On the 40 TFSIe (plug-in hybrid) the 12 V one is an auxiliary battery and does not start the engine. As a VAG Group car with a sensor on the negative terminal, the new battery has to be registered in the ECU. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999, we test it free and change it with no appointment, in about 15 minutes. Guide prices with fitting included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

The Audi A3 is one of the most common premium compacts on Málaga roads, and its battery works harder than it looks: Start-Stop on every version, Virtual Cockpit, driver aids and short city trips that never fully recharge it. On top of that, as a VAG Group car it has a battery sensor on the negative terminal, so fitting the battery and closing the bonnet is not enough: it has to be registered in the ECU. We do it on the spot, with no appointment and registration included, at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga. Everything in the shop: we do not fit batteries at your home.

How to know which one your A3 needs

A quick trick to know what you need: look at the negative terminal. If it has a sensor with a connector coming out of it (the battery state sensor, the usual VAG Group BEM), your A3 manages charging actively and needs EFB or AGM plus registration of the new battery in the ECU. And if your car left the factory with AGM, it has to stay AGM: you can move up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB. Between generations, engines and trims there are too many combinations to guess: give us your plate or start with a free battery check and we will tell you the exact Ah, CCA, technology, polarity and dimensions.

Signs the A3 battery needs replacing

  • Slow cranking when cold, especially on the 2.0 TDI first thing in the morning.
  • Start-Stop stops working, or it works and the engine restarts by itself a few seconds later: the classic first warning on modern A3s.
  • Battery warning light or an electrical system message on the Virtual Cockpit.
  • Battery replaced recently but never registered in the ECU: the car still treats it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.
  • On the 40 TFSIe (plug-in hybrid), the car gives no «READY» and no ignition even with the high-voltage battery charged: it is almost always the 12 V auxiliary one.
  • On the 48 V mild-hybrids, hybrid system or starting warnings: the 12 V battery is still the on-board one and it also runs flat.
  • Windows going up slowly, lights dimming at idle or the car dead after two days parked.
  • More than 4-5 years. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts 4-6 years on average and an EFB or AGM 5-7.

Frequently asked questions about the Audi A3 battery

Which battery does the Audi A3 take and how many amps does it need?

The Audi A3 battery is 12 V and is around 60-80 Ah and 600-800 A depending on the engine. The A3 8Y (2020-) uses EFB or AGM because every version has Start-Stop: EFB on the entry 30 TFSI and AGM on the 2.0 TDI engines, the 48 V mild-hybrids and the higher trims. The previous A3 8V could take EFB or a conventional battery depending on the version. On the 40 TFSIe (plug-in hybrid) the 12 V one is auxiliary: it gives ignition but does not start the engine. On every A3 with a sensor on the negative terminal, the new battery has to be registered in the ECU. How much does an Audi A3 battery change cost in Málaga?

At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) changing an Audi A3 battery costs 85-140 € with a conventional battery, 130-230 € with EFB, 180-280 € with AGM and 280-380 € with a higher-capacity AGM for the S3 and the best equipped versions, always with fitting included. ECU registration, the test beforehand and recycling of the used battery are not charged separately, and the warranty is the one set out in RDL 7/2021. We are an Official Varta Distributor since 1999 and we work with no appointment.

Does the battery have to be registered when you change it on an Audi A3?

Yes. The A3 is a VAG Group car with a battery sensor on the negative terminal and active charge management: the ECU keeps the battery history and adapts charging to how it ages. If you fit a new one without registering it, the car charges it as if it were the old one and cuts its life in half. We do it with the diagnostic tool during the same job and at no extra cost.

My A3 came with AGM from the factory, can I fit a cheaper EFB?

No. An AGM can replace an EFB, but never the other way round. If your A3 left the factory with AGM it is because of the electrical demand and cycling the car asks for, and an EFB cannot cope with it. Saving there usually turns out expensive the following year, with the battery worn out early.

My Audi A3 40 TFSIe gives no ignition, is it the 12 V battery?

Almost always yes. On the A3 40 TFSIe the 12 V battery is auxiliary: it powers the electronics and gives ignition, but it does not move the car or start the combustion engine, that is the high-voltage battery's job. If the 12 V one runs flat, the car gives no «READY» and no ignition even with the traction battery charged. Bring it over or give us your plate and we check it free.

How long does an A3 battery last in Málaga?

Four to six years for a conventional battery and five to seven for an EFB or AGM. The coastal heat evaporates electrolyte and speeds up plate corrosion, so batteries last less here on average than in northern Spain, and with Start-Stop cutting in all day in town it is better not to push it. If yours is over four years old, come by for the free test.
