How do I choose my tractor battery?
Three figures matter: the cold-cranking power (CCA) the diesel engine needs, the capacity in amp-hours (Ah), and the case dimensions and terminal layout. If you don't know them, don't worry: tell us the make and model of the tractor (or machine) and we will identify the exact reference. A battery with less CCA than required will struggle to start in the cold; a poorly secured one is destroyed by vibration. We fit and secure it exactly as it should be.
- Free check: we test the battery and alternator with Midtronics equipment before selling. At rest a healthy battery reads 12.6-12.8 V; below 12.4 V it is partly charged. The alternator should charge between 13.8 and 14.7 V.

Why farm work is so hard on a battery
- Constant vibration on tracks and uneven ground: the plates take far more punishment than on the road. AGM batteries stand up to it noticeably better.
- Months standing idle between seasons: the battery self-discharges and sulphates if it is left half charged.
- Extreme heat in summer, especially on machinery parked in the sun or in unventilated sheds.
- Dust and dirt on the terminals, causing poor contact and failed starts.
If you are going to leave the tractor or the motor pump standing for a season, the ideal is to leave the battery fully charged and, if possible, on a trickle charger. That is the difference between starting first time next season and having to replace it.
Starter or deep cycle: choose carefully
Starting an engine and powering equipment are two different jobs. For tractors, motor pumps and generators you need a starter battery with enough cranking amps (CCA). For electric fencing, off-grid solar installations or equipment that draws current for hours, you need deep cycle (AGM, gel or stationary). Fitting a starter battery in a solar system is the most common and most expensive mistake.
