Spanish regulations require emergency-light batteries to be checked and replaced periodically. Hotels, offices, shops and residents' associations in Málaga must keep their emergency lighting operational in accordance with CTE DB-SI 4 and UNE-EN 60598-2-22.

Battery types

90% of installed emergency lights use NiCd (nickel-cadmium) batteries of 2.4 V, 3.6 V, 4.8 V or 6 V with capacities from 0.8 to 4.5 Ah. More recent models use NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) with the same topology but higher capacity and no cadmium (more environmentally friendly, RoHS).

Regulatory compliance

The Spanish Technical Building Code (CTE DB-SI 4) requires emergency lights to maintain illumination for at least 1 hour after a power cut. To guarantee it: batteries at 100% of nominal capacity. Recommended: check monthly (manual test) and replace every 4 years even if they appear to work.
