Car won't start: how to know if it's the battery The typical symptoms of a flat or worn-out battery are easy to spot: - When you turn the key or press start you hear rapid clicking ("click-click-click") or a single click, but the engine won't crank. - The starter cranks very slowly and weakly , as if it lacks power. - The dashboard lights and headlights look dim or flicker. - The electronics play up: central locking won't respond, the radio resets, windows move slowly. - Nothing happens at all when you switch on the ignition (fully dead battery or loose terminal).
