> We register your new battery in the ECU (BMS and Start-Stop) when we fit it in store, no appointment, in about 15 min. BMW, Audi, VW, Mercedes, Mini…

Have you been told the new battery needs to be registered or "programmed"? On many cars with Start-Stop it is mandatory: if it isn't done, the car keeps charging the battery as if it were the old one. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100) we replace your battery and register it in the ECU on the spot , with diagnostic equipment, no appointment and in about 15 minutes.

What battery registration is and why it matters

Modern cars have a battery management system (BMS) : a sensor on the negative terminal measures how much the battery charges and discharges, and the ECU adjusts the alternator according to the battery's age. When you fit a new battery, the car has to be told. That is registering the battery (also called adapting or coding).

If it isn't registered, three things happen: the car keeps charging the new battery as if it were old, the Start-Stop may stop working and the battery lasts quite a lot less. You'll find the full explanation in our guide registering your car's new battery: BMS and Start-Stop .

Which cars usually need it

Not every car needs it, but more and more do. It depends on the make, model and year; these are the most common cases in Málaga:

- BMW and Mini: registration is mandatory, and you also have to specify whether the battery is AGM or conventional. See BMW 3 Series battery and Mini Cooper battery .

- Volkswagen Group (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Cupra): adaptation via diagnostics on most models with Start-Stop. Examples: Volkswagen Golf , Audi , Seat León , Skoda Octavia and Cupra León .

- Mercedes: on many recent models it is advisable to register the replacement. See Mercedes C-Class battery .

- Other makes with Start-Stop: on some models fitting the right battery is enough; on others the Start-Stop has to be reset. We'll tell you from your number plate.

If you change technology (for example, from an EFB to an AGM ) or capacity, the new type also has to be coded so the alternator charges with the right profile.

Frequently asked questions about battery registration

Do all cars need the new battery registered? No. It is mainly needed by cars with Start-Stop and electronic battery management, such as BMW, Mini, the Volkswagen Group or many Mercedes. On others, fitting the right battery is enough. With your number plate we'll tell you whether yours needs it.

What happens if the battery isn't registered? The car keeps charging the new battery as if it were the old one: it may overcharge it or undercharge it, the Start-Stop may stop working and the battery lasts less than normal.

How long does a replacement with registration take? On most cars it fits within the approximately 15 minutes of the replacement, with no appointment. On some models access to the battery or the diagnostics take a little longer; we'll tell you when you give us your number plate.

Is registration charged separately? If you replace your battery with us, registration in the ECU is included along with the check, fitting and recycling of the old battery.

Do I need an appointment? No. Come to the shop at C/ La Orotava, 100, in Polígono San Luis, during our opening hours from Monday to Friday. If you want to make sure we have your battery, send us a WhatsApp with your number plate beforehand.
