# Where to recycle batteries in Málaga: car, motorbike, UPS, household and lithium

> Blog article — Málaga Baterías · Updated 2026-11-02

_Where each battery goes in Málaga: we take lead-acid ones (car, motorbike, UPS) free, no purchase needed. Household and lithium: council recycling centre._

You have an old battery sitting in the garage, the office or a storage room and you’re not sure where to take it. The answer depends on the type: a car battery doesn’t go to the same place as an e-scooter battery or a handful of AA cells. In this guide, written from our shop in Málaga, we explain where each one goes, what we take back for free and how to bring it safely, whether you live in the city or anywhere on the Costa del Sol.

Quick answer: at Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, Polígono San Luis) we take lead-acid batteries free of charge — car, motorbike, lorry, boat, caravan, and the lead-acid batteries from UPS units, alarms or wheelchairs — even if you don’t buy anything, Monday to Friday. We don’t buy used batteries or pay for them. We don’t accept household batteries or lithium batteries (e-scooter, e-bike, phone, laptop, power tool): take those to your local council recycling centre (“punto limpio”) or to the battery collection bins found in many shops.

Which battery do you have, and where to recycle it in Málaga

Find your case in the table. What matters is the chemistry: lead-acid batteries come to our shop; lithium batteries and household cells go to the council collection system.

Battery type Do we accept it in the shop? Where to take it if not

Car and van (lead-acid: conventional, EFB or AGM) Yes, free —

Motorbike (lead-acid) Yes, free If it’s lithium, your local “punto limpio”

Lorry, boat, caravan or motorhome (lead-acid) Yes, free —

UPS, alarm or emergency light (lead-acid, AGM) Yes, free —

Wheelchair or mobility scooter (AGM or gel) Yes, free If it’s lithium, your local “punto limpio”

E-scooter, e-bike, phone, laptop or power tool (lithium) No Your local “punto limpio”

Household batteries (AA, AAA, button cells, 9 V…) No Battery bins in shops or the “punto limpio”

How to tell if your battery is lead-acid

Lead-acid batteries are very heavy for their size and the label usually says something like “Pb”, “lead-acid”, “AGM”, “gel”, “VRLA” or “SLA”. Lithium batteries say “Li-ion”, “lithium” or “LiFePO4”. If you’re not sure, send us a photo of the label on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you whether you can bring it in.

Lead-acid batteries: free drop-off at our shop

If your battery is lead-acid, bring it to C/ La Orotava, 100, Monday to Friday. You don’t need to buy anything or book: just leave it at the counter and we hand it over to an authorised waste manager for recycling. There’s more detail on our environment and recycling page.

- Vehicles: car, van, motorbike, lorry, boat, caravan and motorhome. It doesn’t matter what brand it is or where you bought it.

- Equipment: lead-acid batteries from UPS units, alarm panels and emergency lights.

- Mobility: lead-acid, AGM or gel batteries from wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

- Several at once: if you’re a business, a garage or a residents’ association with quite a few, message us first so we can arrange it.

Do you buy used batteries? No

We’ll be clear about this, because many people search for “sell used batteries in Málaga”: we don’t buy used batteries and we don’t pay for them. What we offer is free collection and making sure they end up in the right recycling channel. And if you’re thinking of doing the opposite and buying a used one, first read what you should know about a second-hand battery .

UPS units, alarms and wheelchairs

UPS and alarm batteries are usually small lead-acid AGM units and are easy to bring in. If you need a replacement, we sell UPS batteries in Málaga : when we deliver to offices and shops, we take the old one away for recycling. With wheelchairs, check the label: most use lead-acid, but some models use lithium.

Household and lithium batteries: to the “punto limpio”

We don’t accept household batteries or lithium batteries in the shop. It’s not that we don’t want to help: they go through a different recycling channel from lead-acid. This is where they go:

- Household batteries: to the battery collection bins in many shops or to your local “punto limpio”.

- E-scooter and e-bike: to the “punto limpio”. If in doubt, ask there before you turn up with the battery.

- Phone, laptop and power tool: also to the “punto limpio”, ideally with the device switched off.

- If it’s swollen or damaged: don’t charge it or use it, and ask the “punto limpio” how to hand it in.

Why it shouldn’t go in the bin

A lead-acid battery contains lead and acid. In a wheelie bin or dumped on waste ground, the casing eventually cracks and what’s inside ends up in the soil and the water. It doesn’t go in the yellow recycling bin or any other street container either.

The good news is that it’s one of the best-recovered types of waste: it’s recycled almost entirely and much of the material goes back into making new batteries. That only happens if it reaches an authorised waste manager. If the battery you have at home is from your car and you want to know how to store it until you bring it in, we explain it in what to do with a used battery .

How to bring the battery in safely

A lead-acid battery is heavy and contains acid, so handle it calmly and as little as possible:

- Always keep it upright, terminals facing up. Don’t lay it flat or on its side.

- Put it in a box or a strong bag and place it in the boot so it can’t slide around.

- Make sure the terminals don’t touch anything metal.

- If the casing is cracked or leaking, don’t handle it without gloves and let us know before you come.

If you live outside the city, in the Axarquía, the Guadalhorce valley or along the western Costa del Sol, and the trip isn’t worth it, ask at your local “punto limpio” whether they take lead-acid batteries. If you’d rather bring it to us, you’ll find directions in how to find our shop . …
