_Mobility scooter and electric wheelchair batteries: how long they last, signs they need replacing, AGM or gel, and ordering from a label photo. Málaga._

An electric wheelchair or mobility scooter means freedom: popping to the market, going down to the seafront promenade, visiting family. When the batteries start to fail, that freedom shrinks little by little, and often nobody notices until the scooter stops halfway home. In this guide we explain, from our battery shop in Málaga, how to tell when the batteries are coming to the end, how long they usually last, what helps them last and how to order the right ones without having to move the chair. It is written for users and, above all, for the sons, daughters, grandchildren and carers who so often end up buying them.

Quick answer: with daily use, the batteries in an electric wheelchair or mobility scooter usually last between 1.5 and 3 years. It is time to replace them when the range drops, the gauge falls suddenly or the chair no longer manages your usual trips. Most models take two 12 V deep-cycle batteries (AGM or gel), and both are replaced at the same time with identical ones. A car battery will not do. At Málaga Baterías we confirm the right part from a photo of the label sent on WhatsApp, with no need to bring the chair in.

Signs that your wheelchair or scooter batteries are coming to the end

Mobility batteries rarely die overnight: they give you warning. These are the signs customers mention most at our counter:

- The range has dropped. On a full charge, the chair or scooter travels noticeably less than it used to.

- The gauge falls suddenly. It leaves home showing full and, shortly afterwards, drops several bars, especially on slopes or when pulling away.

- It no longer manages the usual trips. The outing you once did without thinking now means turning back early “just in case”.

- It runs slower or jerkily when the battery is not freshly charged.

If you recognise two or more of these signs and the charger is working normally, the battery set is most likely reaching the end of its life.

How long they last and what shortens their life

With daily use and correct charging, a set of wheelchair or scooter batteries lasts roughly between 1.5 and 3 years. Whether you get the minimum or the maximum depends largely on habits:

- Leaving them flat. This is what harms them most. A battery that sits empty for days loses capacity it never gets back.

- Running them right down. Regularly going down to zero wears them out much faster.

- Heat and sun. In Málaga and all along the Costa del Sol, leaving the scooter in the sun on the terrace or stored in a hot storeroom shortens its life. A shaded, ventilated spot is better.

- Long spells without use without charging them from time to time, for example during a hospital stay or a trip back home.

Sensible charging habits

Always charge with the original charger from the wheelchair or scooter manufacturer, or one they recommend, and follow the user manual: every model has its own guidance on when and for how long to charge. As a general rule, these batteries do not like being left flat, so it is best not to put off recharging until “tomorrow”. If you are going to store the chair or scooter for a while, check the manual for how to leave it ready.

Why both are replaced at once (and always identical)

Most wheelchairs and scooters take two 12 V batteries connected in series. They work as a team: if one is more worn than the other, the good one does the work of both and fails before its time. That is why both are replaced together, of the same type, the same capacity and, ideally, the same model. Changing just one looks like a saving, but it usually ends up costing more.

Which battery does your chair or scooter take?

Mobility batteries are deep-cycle batteries : they are designed to deliver energy steadily throughout the journey and be recharged every day. This table gives a guide to the most common set-ups, but the exact part is always shown on the label of the battery currently fitted.

Type of equipment Usual set-up What to check on the label

Folding or compact wheelchair 2 × 12 V Voltage, Ah and dimensions: the space is usually very tight

Standard electric wheelchair 2 × 12 V Voltage, Ah, terminal type and whether it is AGM or gel

Small mobility scooter 2 × 12 V Voltage, Ah and dimensions (sometimes they sit inside a battery box)

Large mobility scooter 2 × 12 V Voltage, Ah, dimensions, terminal and technology

You will find more details on our page about wheelchair and mobility scooter batteries in Málaga .

AGM or gel: which to choose

Both are sealed and maintenance-free: there is no water to top up and they are suitable for equipment used indoors. AGM is the most common and offers good value for money. Gel usually copes better with deep discharges and heavy daily use, and normally costs a little more. The sensible choice is to stick with the technology the manufacturer specifies; if in doubt, ask us and we will look at it together.

Why a car battery will not do

A car battery is built to deliver a big burst of power for a few seconds when starting, and then recharge straight away. A wheelchair or scooter asks for exactly the opposite: steady energy and a fairly deep discharge every day. Fitted to mobility equipment, a starter battery fails very quickly. On top of that, its size and terminals do not usually fit.

How to order them in Málaga without moving the chair

There is no need to bring the wheelchair or scooter to the shop. The easiest way is to take a photo of the label on one of the batteries currently fitted and send it to us. It shows the four details we need:

- Voltage (usually 12 V).

- Capacity in Ah.

- Dimensions of the battery.

- Terminal type (the shape of the connection).

If you cannot get to the battery, tell us the make and model of the wheelchair or scooter. …
