# LiFePO4 lithium batteries for motorhomes: are they worth it in 2026?

_LiFePO4 for motorhomes: 80-90% usable discharge, 2,000-5,000 cycles, 15-20 kg lighter per 100 Ah. When it pays off against AGM, and when it does not._

A LiFePO4 lithium battery for a motorhome pays off if you spend more than 30 nights a year off-grid: it uses 80-90% of its capacity (against 50% for AGM), lasts 2,000-5,000 cycles and weighs 15-20 kg less per 100 Ah. In exchange it costs 2-3 times more upfront, so for 2-5 weekends a year a properly sized AGM is still the better deal. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, Málaga · Official Varta Distributor) we give free advice on caravan and motorhome batteries , no appointment needed.

Real advantages over AGM

- Weight : a 100 Ah lithium battery weighs 12-15 kg. An equivalent AGM, 28-35 kg. That is 15-20 kg less per 100 Ah.

- Energy density : LiFePO4 stores roughly 3-4 times more energy per kilo than lead-acid (~90-120 Wh/kg vs ~30-40 Wh/kg).

- Volume : around 30-40% less space.

- Depth of discharge (DoD) : AGM takes 50% without damage. LiFePO4 takes 80-90% usable DoD without significant damage. For the same usable capacity: a 100 Ah LiFePO4 ≈ a 200 Ah AGM .

- Cycles : premium AGM = 600-800 cycles at 50% DoD. LiFePO4 = 2,000-5,000 cycles at 80-90% DoD. Real service life: 10-15 years in normal motorhome use against 5-7 for an AGM.

- Fast charging : accepts high charge currents (up to C/1, i.e. 100 A on a 100 Ah unit). AGM tops out at C/4. Much faster charging from solar or the alternator.

- Efficiency : 95-98% round trip. AGM: 80-85%. It shows when you charge from solar panels.

- No gassing, no ventilation required : it can be installed inside the living area.

- Flatter voltage : the inverter and fridge see a steadier voltage throughout the discharge.

Drawbacks nobody mentions

- Upfront price : a 100 Ah LiFePO4 costs €600-900. An equivalent AGM (200 Ah), €300-450.

- Specific charger : you need a charger (Victron, Mastervolt, Sterling, NDS) with a lithium or configurable profile. Your motorhome's old charger probably is not compatible (around €200-400 to upgrade if needed).

- Charging temperature : LiFePO4 must NOT be charged below 0 °C (permanent damage). In Málaga that virtually never happens, but it does if you winter in the mountains. Most units carry internal heaters (8-15 W) for this.

- Different charge voltage : 14.4 V maximum against 14.8 V for AGM. Some solar regulators run at a fixed 14.8 V and must be reconfigured.

- Internal BMS : the battery carries protective electronics. If the BMS fails, the battery is unusable even with perfect cells. Look for brands with a repairable or replaceable BMS.

When it does pay off

- Heavy use: 30+ nights a year off-grid.

- Demanding kit: large compressor fridge, TV, air conditioning or microwave through an inverter, laptop chargers.

- Weight limits (motorhomes close to the 3,500 kg limit).

- Space limits in the battery locker.

- Long-term plan (10+ years with the same vehicle).

When it does not pay off

- Occasional use (2-5 weekends a year): a properly sized AGM is more economical.

- Tight budget and an older motorhome you will sell within 1-2 years.

- An old incompatible charger you do not want to replace.

- An investment worth more than the motorhome's residual value.

10-year ROI

Take a regular user with 200 Ah of AGM (or 100 Ah of lithium equivalent):

- AGM option : 2× AGM 100 Ah Varta Professional Dual Purpose = €450. Service life 5-7 years. Over 10 years, 2 replacements = €900, standard charger already included.

- LiFePO4 option : 1× branded 100 Ah LiFePO4 = €800. Service life 10-15 years: at year 10 it is still working. Plus a lithium charger if needed (€300). Total: €1,100.

Difference over 10 years : lithium comes out about €200 dearer. But it weighs 30-35 kg less, takes half the space and doubles your autonomy off-grid. If you use the motorhome intensively, it is worth it .

What each brand offers

- Varta — its Professional Dual Purpose line for caravan and marine use is AGM/EFB, not LiFePO4. This is the range we carry as Official Varta Distributor.

- Victron Smart Lithium 12.8/100 and 12.8/200 — Bluetooth BMS, the reference brand.

- Mastervolt MLI — premium range for professionals.

- Renogy LiFePO4 — good value for domestic users.

- Liontron / Super B / EcoFlow — mid-range options.

In the shop we advise you based on your use, budget and compatibility with your current installation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wire a lithium battery in parallel with my existing AGM?

No. Charge voltages and discharge curves differ: the two batteries fight each other, the lead-acid one ends up working outside its range and both lose service life. If you move to lithium, you replace the whole service bank.

Will my current solar panel charge a LiFePO4?

If the regulator is a modern MPPT with a lithium profile (Victron, Renogy, EPEver), yes. If it is an old PWM fixed at 14.8 V, no: it has to be replaced, because LiFePO4 charges at 14.4 V maximum.

Can a lithium battery be charged in the cold?

Below 0 °C a LiFePO4 must not be charged: metallic lithium plates onto the anode and the damage is permanent. Discharging is fine. In Málaga this is rarely an issue, but if you winter in the mountains choose a model with an internal heater or a BMS that cuts charging when cold.

How much weight do I actually save on an average motorhome?

Replacing 2× 100 Ah AGM (about 60 kg) with 1× 100 Ah LiFePO4 (about 13 kg) saves 47 kg for the same usable capacity. That is the weight of one passenger.
