# Technical guide: how to choose the right motorcycle battery (CCA, AGM, Freshpack)

_Choose the right motorcycle battery: JIS code, Ah, CCA and which technology (Freshpack, AGM, gel, lithium) suits your bike. Expert advice in Málaga._

Getting your motorcycle battery right comes down to three things: the JIS code stamped on the current battery (for example YTX14-BS), which fixes dimensions, terminals and polarity; the capacity in Ah , which must never be lower than the original; and the right technology (Freshpack for town use, AGM for bikes with heavy electronics, gel or lithium for specific cases). At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, Málaga · Official Varta Distributor) we identify the exact reference in 5 minutes, no appointment needed. Applies to motorcycles, scooters, quads and jet skis.

The 3 parameters you cannot ignore

1) JIS code or equivalent reference

Motorcycle batteries are identified by a code such as YTX14-BS , YT12B-BS or YB16AL-A2 (Japanese JIS standard). The code defines dimensions, nominal capacity, terminal type and polarity . Using a different one can mean:

- It does not physically fit the battery tray.

- The terminals do not reach the original cables.

- Reversed polarity → short circuit.

You will find it stamped on the current battery or in your owner's manual. If you cannot locate it, give us the make, model and year on +34 952 31 01 18 and we will tell you the exact reference.

2) Capacity (Ah)

This is the battery's capacity: 10 Ah means 1 A for 10 hours (or the equivalent at a given discharge rate). Small urban bikes (50-125 cc) use 4-7 Ah. Mid-range (250-600 cc): 8-12 Ah. Large and trail bikes (>600 cc): 12-20 Ah. Never fit a battery with fewer Ah than the original : the starter motor will not get enough current, especially when cold.

3) Cold cranking amps (CCA)

The maximum current the battery can deliver at –18 °C for 30 seconds without dropping below 7.2 V. For motorcycles: 50-300 A depending on engine size. Málaga rarely sees –18 °C , so real CCA matters less here than in cold climates. It still works as an indicator of electrical health.

Motorcycle battery technologies

Conventional (flooded lead-acid, with caps)

The traditional type. You must top up distilled water every 1-2 years. Cheapest option. Used on classic bikes, older mopeds and bikes with little electronics. Service life in Málaga: 2-3 years .

Sealed / maintenance-free (Freshpack)

Supplied with the acid in a separate bottle (the Freshpack container). You or we activate it at the moment of first use. Once activated it needs no maintenance or topping up. It is the best-selling option on modern bikes thanks to its price/durability balance. Service life: 3-4 years . Recommended: Varta PowerSports SLI Freshpack .

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat)

The electrolyte is absorbed in a glass-fibre mat. Sealed, spill-proof, vibration resistant . It handles more cycles and starts than a conventional battery. Required on many premium modern bikes (BMW, Ducati, KTM, Triumph) and sports bikes with heavy electronics. Service life: 4-5 years . Brand: Varta PowerSports AGM .

Gel

Gelled electrolyte. Very resistant to deep discharge and long idle periods (bikes parked for months over winter). Needs a specific gel charger ; a conventional charger can damage it. Used on Harley-Davidson customs and large-displacement bikes with occasional use.

Lithium (LiFePO4)

The most advanced technology. It weighs a quarter of an equivalent lead battery (1-2 kg against 4-6 kg), because it stores roughly 3-4 times more energy per kilo. Service life about double (5-8 years against 2-4 for a conventional one). No appreciable self-discharge over winter storage. Firmer cranking. High upfront cost (€200-400 against €25-120 for a Freshpack) but a lower cost per year of service. Popular on track bikes, customs and bikes left standing. Important : it needs a specific lithium charger and must not be charged below 0 °C.

How to decide which suits you

Bike type Recommended technology Service life in Málaga

50 cc moped, urban Freshpack 3-4 years

Scooter 125-300 cc Freshpack or AGM (if Start-Stop) 3-5 years

Maxi-scooter / Burgman AGM 4-5 years

Naked / mid sport (300-700 cc) AGM 4-5 years

Premium sport >700 cc AGM or lithium 4-8 years

Harley-Davidson custom Gel or lithium 5-6 years

Trail / off-road (BMW GS, KTM Adventure) AGM 4-6 years

Classic bike (Vespa, Bultaco, Montesa) Conventional or Freshpack 2-4 years

Bike parked for months Lithium or AGM + maintainer 5-10 years

Track sport bike Lithium 5-8 years

Quad, jet ski, snowmobile AGM 3-5 years

Common mistakes we see in the workshop

- Replacing AGM with conventional to save money : the bike's regulator charges on the wrong profile and the conventional battery sulphates or overcharges. Service life: 12-18 months.

- Activating a Freshpack without waiting for absorption : you must wait 30 minutes before charging or fitting it. Skip that and the battery performs below its rated capacity and loses service life.

- Charging gel or lithium with a conventional charger : damaged within a few cycles.

- Buying lithium without checking the bike's regulator : if the regulator is out of range (>14.8 V) it damages lithium quickly.

- Leaving the bike all winter without a maintainer : sulphation in 2-3 months. A conventional motorcycle battery treated well lasts 4 years; treated badly, 12 months.

Basic monthly maintenance

- Check resting voltage (engine off for 4+ hours): it should be >12.6 V.

- Check the terminals: clean, dry and tight.

- If the bike goes more than 2 weeks unused, connect a smart maintainer (Varta, CTEK, Optimate) or ride 20-30 minutes on the motorway.

- On flooded batteries, check the electrolyte level and top up with distilled water if low.
