_Specific care for caravan, motorhome and marine batteries in Málaga coastal climate: humidity, salt, heat and self-discharge._

If you have a motorhome, camper van or leisure boat on the Costa del Sol, your leisure battery faces three enemies at once: sustained summer heat, coastal humidity and salinity, and long periods of inactivity during winter storage . In this technical guide we explain how to keep it in good condition so it lasts 5-7 years with proper care, compared with the 2-3 years it usually manages without any.

The combined problem: three factors that multiply each other

Leisure batteries (Dual Purpose, Deep Cycle, AGM, gel or lithium) are designed for repeated deep discharges. But in Malaga's coastal climate:

- Sustained heat from June to September : ambient temperatures above 30 °C for weeks on end. Inside a motorhome parked in the sun, it can exceed 50 °C. This accelerates self-discharge and evaporation.

- Coastal humidity and salt-laden air : especially in Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola, Caleta de Vélez, Puerto Banús and La Bajadilla. It corrodes terminals, connectors, fuses and wiring.

- Prolonged inactivity from October to March : the motorhome or boat sits idle for 4-6 months. If the charge is not maintained, the batteries sulphate irreversibly.

Basic maintenance (5 minutes a month)

- Check the resting voltage (with everything disconnected): 12.6-12.8 V means a healthy battery, <12.4 V means it needs charging.

- Inspect the terminals : if there is white-greenish corrosion, clean with a stiff-bristle brush + dielectric grease or a specific spray. Tighten firmly.

- Check the electrolyte level (open batteries with caps only): it must cover the plates. If it is low, top up with distilled water (NEVER tap water: the calcium would damage the plates).

- Run the rest of the installation at least once a month : lights, water pump, fridge. This prevents mild sulphation from small discharges.

Strategy for long inactivity (winter storage)

From October to March in Malaga, most motorhomes and boats sit idle. Three options, ranked from best to worst:

Option A: Permanent solar maintainer (the ideal choice)

A 20-40 W solar panel on the motorhome roof, connected via an MPPT regulator to the leisure battery. It keeps the battery at 100% without overcharging. Investment: 80-200 €. Payback: 1-2 batteries saved (300-600 €).

Option B: Smart maintainer connected to the mains

A smart charger such as Varta, CTEK MXS 5.0/10.0, NDS Schaudt plugged into a socket in the garage or on the pitch. It automatically detects the charge level and holds the battery in float mode. Investment: 80-180 €. You connect it at the start of winter storage and disconnect it in March.

Option C: Periodic manual charging

Charge the battery to 100% once a month with a conventional charger. It requires remembering and having access to the vehicle. If you skip it, sulphation sets in quickly.

Option D that does NOT work : leaving the leisure battery connected with all consumers active. Even if standby draw is only 20 mA (control panel, alarm, aerial), over 4 months that is 60 Ah lost → guaranteed sulphation.

Boating on the Costa del Sol: the extra salt factor

If your boat is moored at Puerto Banús, La Bajadilla (Marbella), Puerto Deportivo de Fuengirola, Estepona or Caleta de Vélez, salt spray is especially aggressive:

- Use specific marine batteries (Varta Professional Marine SuperCycle or Starter Marine): reinforced casing and anti-corrosion terminals.

- Sealed covers on the battery compartment : most modern boats have them, but check that they are properly sealed.

- Dielectric spray applied generously to the terminals after every outing.

- Inspect clamps and wiring every 3 months; replace them when you see internal corrosion in the cable.

When to replace the battery instead of maintaining it

There comes a point where maintenance is no longer viable. Symptoms:

- Resting voltage In our shop we run a capacity test that measures how many real Ah the battery delivers compared with its nominal rating. If it is below 50%, replacing it works out cheaper than maintaining it.

Recommendations by battery type

AGM (the best sellers)

It handles Malaga's heat well. Float voltage 13.6-13.8 V . Use a modern charger with an AGM profile; old fixed-voltage chargers charge poorly (they undercharge and sulphate, or overcharge because they never cut off) and deteriorate the battery.

Gel

Resistant to very deep discharges. Gel-specific charger (a different profile from AGM). If you use an AGM charger on a gel battery, deterioration is accelerated.

LiFePO4 lithium

The least sensitive to heat and inactivity. Self-discharge is almost zero. It withstands discharges to 90% without damage. A lithium-specific charger is mandatory. Real service life in Malaga: 8-15 years depending on use and temperature (sustained heat also degrades lithium).

Open lead-acid (the cheapest)

NOT recommended in Malaga for caravan service use. They lose water, require monthly maintenance, and their service life drops to 2-3 years. The low initial investment ends up costing more.

FAQ

Can I leave the motorhome plugged into 220 V all winter?

Yes, if you have a smart charger with the correct profile (not an old transformer). Any modern Schaudt, NDS, Victron, Mastervolt or similar charger does this well.

Is it true that the fridge is the biggest consumer?

Among fixed loads, yes. A compressor fridge uses 40-60 Ah/day. LED lights, the water pump and USB chargers usually add up to 10-20 Ah/day. Standby losses from the control panel and alarm, 5-10 Ah/day.

My boat is moored with a 220 V shore connection on the pontoon. Do I need a maintainer?

Yes, all the same. The 220 V connection powers the charger, but you need a smart charger (Mastervolt, Sterling, Victron) to avoid continuous overcharging.
