The Volkswagen range runs on 12 V batteries, and the technology depends on whether the car has Start-Stop : conventional on older models and entry 1.0 MPI without Start-Stop, EFB on most TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines with Start-Stop, and AGM on higher-spec versions and on the plug-in GTE and eHybrid, where the 12 V is an auxiliary battery. Almost every modern Volkswagen has a sensor on the negative terminal, so the new battery must be registered with the ECU . At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999 , we check it free of charge and replace it without an appointment, in about 15 minutes , registration included. Guideline prices with fitting included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

Every kind of VAG group car runs on Málaga's roads, and the Volkswagen is among the most common: Golf, Polo, T-Roc and Tiguan turn up at the shop every day. With this range the key difference is registration: on models with Start-Stop, fitting the battery and closing the bonnet isn't enough — it has to be registered with the ECU , or the car charges it badly and it lasts half as long. We do it on the spot, without an appointment and at the shop (we don't offer mobile fitting), at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga .

Which battery does a Volkswagen take?

The VAG group's particularity is its energy management system with a sensor on the negative terminal: the new battery is registered with the ECU so the car charges it correctly. The technology steps up with the equipment level —conventional, EFB or AGM— and you can never go down from AGM to EFB (you can move up from EFB to AGM). On the Golf GTE and other plug-in eHybrids, the 12 V is an auxiliary battery: it powers the electronics and lets you switch on, but it doesn't move the car. Indicative figures, all 12 V :

Model Typical technology Start-Stop Note
Volkswagen Golf EFB or AGM (conventional on older generations) Yes ECU registration required; plug-in GTE with 12 V auxiliary
Volkswagen T-Roc EFB or AGM Yes Compact SUV, TSI/TDI; registration required
Volkswagen Polo EFB (conventional on entry 1.0 MPI) Yes / No Supermini; shares mechanicals with the Seat Ibiza
Volkswagen Tiguan AGM or EFB Yes SUV with a heavy electrical load; AGM common; eHybrid with 12 V auxiliary
Volkswagen T-Cross EFB Yes Small SUV with Start-Stop
Volkswagen Passat AGM or EFB Yes Well-equipped saloon/estate; plug-in GTE with 12 V auxiliary

Guideline figures: they vary with year, trim and equipment. “—” = we confirm it from your number plate.

A quick way to tell what yours needs: look at the negative terminal . If there's a sensor with a connector coming out of it, your Volkswagen manages charging actively and needs an EFB or AGM plus registration of the new battery with the ECU. And if your car left the factory with AGM, it stays AGM.

Signs it's time to replace it

- Slow cranking from cold, especially first thing in the morning.

- Start-Stop doesn't engage , or it does and the engine restarts by itself seconds later: the classic first warning on modern Volkswagens.

- A permanent dashboard message saying the Start-Stop conditions aren't met.

- Intermittent glitches on the screen, the audio system or the driver-assistance systems.

- A recently replaced battery that was never registered with the ECU : the car keeps treating it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.

- On a Golf GTE or eHybrid, the car won't switch on even though the traction battery is charged: usually the 12 V auxiliary.

- More than 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts 4-6 years on average and an EFB or AGM 5-7 .
