The battery you replace on a Toyota Corolla hybrid (HEV) is the 12 V auxiliary battery , an AGM of around 45-50 Ah and 325-390 A : it is not the traction battery . On the petrol 1.2 Turbo with Start-Stop it is an EFB of around 60-70 Ah and 600-680 A , and on older Corolla without Start-Stop, a conventional battery of around 45-70 Ah and 400-640 A . At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, Málaga), Official Varta Distributor , we replace it with no appointment in about 15 minutes , free Midtronics test and recycling included. Price fitted: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

Almost every Corolla sold in Spain today is a hybrid (HEV) , which brings the most common misunderstanding we hear at the counter: "my hybrid battery is dead" . It almost never is. What goes flat is the 12 V auxiliary battery , an ordinary lead battery (usually AGM ) that we do replace at C/ La Orotava, 100 (Málaga) , with no appointment and in about 15 minutes, as an Official Varta Distributor .

Which battery does the Toyota Corolla take?

It depends on whether it's a hybrid or pure combustion, and on the generation. These are guide ranges , not exact part numbers; we confirm it from your registration plate.

Version 12 V battery type Guide figures Start-Stop

Corolla hybrid 1.8 HEV / 2.0 HEV (and Touring Sports) AGM 12 V auxiliary (with vent tube) around 45-50 Ah / 325-390 A Yes (hybrid system)

Petrol 1.2 Turbo with Start-Stop EFB (or AGM where specified) around 60-70 Ah / 600-680 A Yes

Older Corolla (petrol or diesel, no Start-Stop ) Conventional (lead-acid) around 45-70 Ah / 400-640 A No

The key point: the hybrid Corolla has two batteries and they are nothing alike.

- Traction battery (high voltage): the pack that drives the car electrically and recharges itself under braking and from the petrol engine. It is high voltage , has its own manufacturer warranty with periodic checks in the official network, and we neither sell nor handle it .

- 12 V auxiliary battery: it powers the ECUs, lights, screen and locking, and it is what "wakes up" the hybrid system when you press the start button. This is the one we sell and fit.

Here's the detail almost nobody knows: the hybrid Corolla has no conventional starter motor . The petrol engine is spun by a motor-generator powered by the traction battery. The 12 V battery moves nothing mechanically — what it does is wake the ECUs and close the main relays of the high-voltage system. If the 12 V is flat, the car never reaches READY even with a full hybrid battery. That's how a Corolla can be "dead" with all its energy intact.

How to know which one is yours

Fastest route: send us your plate on WhatsApp and within minutes we'll tell you the type, Ah, CCA, polarity, dimensions and fitted price. It's especially worth doing on the hybrid Corolla for two reasons:

- Location: on many hybrid versions the 12 V battery is not in the engine bay but in the boot (under the floor or to one side). If you open the bonnet and can't find it, you're not going mad.

- Venting: sitting inside the cabin or boot, the battery needs its gas vent tube connected. A non-vented battery fitted there is a hazard, not a saving.

If you prefer, come by for a free battery test with our Midtronics tester before you decide anything.

Signs it needs replacing

- You press start and "READY" never appears : the dashboard lights up, you hear relays or beeps, and that's it. The classic symptom of a flat 12 V on a hybrid Corolla.

- On start-up several warning lights come on at once (triangle, ABS, traction control, "Check hybrid system") and clear themselves on the second attempt: these are voltage-drop warnings, not real faults.

- The infotainment reboots or loses its settings.

- The car has been parked for two or three weeks and won't wake up. Very common in Málaga: leave the Corolla in the airport car park and come back to a car that won't go READY. The hybrid's 12 V only recharges while the car is running (READY), never while parked.

- The battery is more than 4 years old . With Málaga's heat, real life is 4-6 years for conventional and 5-7 years for AGM .

Useful warning: if you have to jump-start a hybrid Corolla, use the designated points in the engine bay (not directly on the boot battery), and never use your Corolla to jump-start another car : the 12 V is small and the system isn't designed for it.
