The Mini range uses a 12 V battery that is nearly always AGM : built on the BMW platform, the Cooper, Cooper S, JCW and petrol Countryman with Start-Stop carry AGM as standard , and even the electric Cooper SE uses a 12 V AGM or EFB as its auxiliary battery . Every Mini has an IBS sensor on the negative terminal , so the new battery must be registered in the car's control unit. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999 , we test it free and change it without an appointment, in about 15 minutes . Guide prices, installation included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

Málaga sees the whole spread, from a second-hand Mini to the latest Cooper with Start-Stop, and they all share one root: they are BMW underneath . That makes a difference when changing the battery, because it is not enough to fit a new one and close the bonnet: it must be registered in the control unit so the car charges it properly. We do it on the spot, without an appointment , at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga .

What battery does a Mini use?

Mini shares its platform, electronics and energy management with BMW , and that defines its battery: 12 V AGM across almost the whole range, with an IBS sensor on the negative terminal that requires the new battery to be registered in the control unit . If it is not registered, the system treats it as the old one, charges it poorly and halves its life. Another quirk of the brand: the battery is not always under the bonnet ; depending on the model and year it can sit in a less usual spot, something we confirm from your number plate before starting. Guide values, all at 12 V :

Range type Technology Control-unit registration Note
Cooper / One (petrol, Start-Stop) AGM (EFB on entry versions) Yes (IBS sensor) Starter battery; keep the original technology
Cooper S / John Cooper Works (turbo petrol) AGM Yes (IBS sensor) Higher loads and cycling: AGM as standard, do not drop to EFB
Countryman (petrol SUV Start-Stop; some PHEV) AGM Yes (IBS sensor) Larger capacity; on PHEV the 12 V is a separate auxiliary
Cooper SE (fully electric) 12 V AGM or EFB (auxiliary) Yes The 12 V powers ignition and electronics; it does not start. CCA: —

Guideline figures: they vary with year, trim and equipment. “—” = not applicable or confirmed from your number plate.

- 03 15-minute fitting

- 04 Control-unit registration & recycling

Signs it's time to change it

- Slow cranking when cold, especially first thing in the morning.

- Start-Stop no longer engages , or it engages and the engine restarts by itself seconds later: the classic first warning on modern Minis.

- Battery warning light or an energy message on the dashboard.

- Intermittent glitches on the screen, the sat-nav or the sound system.

- Battery replaced recently but not registered in the control unit : the car keeps treating it as the old one, charges it poorly and it lasts half as long.

- On the Cooper SE, no ignition or READY even with the traction battery charged: it is usually the 12 V auxiliary.

- Over 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts on average 4-6 years and an AGM 5-7 .
