The Mini Countryman battery is 12 V, almost always AGM, and it must be registered to the car's computer : the F60 Countryman (2017 onwards) comes with AGM as standard, 70-90 Ah and 680-850 A , plus a battery sensor (IBS) on the negative terminal, so a new battery has to be coded in; the earlier R60 Countryman used a conventional or an EFB battery depending on whether it had Start-Stop, and the plug-in Cooper S E ALL4 uses a 12 V auxiliary battery that powers the electronics but does not crank the engine. On many Countryman the battery sits in the boot, under the floor. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999 , we test it free and replace it with no appointment, in about 15 minutes , registration included. Guide prices, fitting included: 130-230 € EFB, 180-280 € AGM and 280-380 € higher-capacity AGM.

The Mini Countryman is the big Mini, a compact SUV you see all over Málaga, in town and on trips along the Costa del Sol. And although it wears a Mini badge, underneath it's a BMW: it shares its platform with the X1, so it has AGM as standard, a battery sensor on the negative terminal and mandatory registration of the new battery. That changes things compared with an old-school hatchback: here, fitting the battery and closing the boot isn't enough, it has to be coded to the computer . We do it on the spot, with no appointment , at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga .

Which battery does the Mini Countryman take?

By generation and engine

Guide figures, all at 12 V :

Version Guide Ah Cranking (A) Technology Start-Stop
Countryman R60 without Start-Stop (2010-2016) 60-70 Ah 540-640 A Conventional No
Countryman R60 with Start-Stop / Cooper D 70 Ah 680-720 A EFB Yes
Countryman F60 One / Cooper 1.5 (petrol) 70-80 Ah 680-760 A AGM Yes
Countryman F60 Cooper S 2.0 / Cooper SD (diesel) 80-90 Ah 760-850 A AGM Yes
Cooper S E ALL4 (plug-in hybrid, 12 V auxiliary) 70 Ah — AGM or EFB Yes

Guide values: they change with the year, trim and equipment. "—" = a figure we confirm from your number plate (on the plug-in the 12 V doesn't crank the engine, so a cranking CCA doesn't apply).

How to tell which one your Countryman needs

Quick trick: look at the negative terminal . If there's a sensor with a connector coming off it (the battery state sensor, IBS), your Countryman manages charging actively and needs AGM plus registration of the new battery to the computer. Almost every F60 has it. And since they come with AGM from the factory, you have to keep AGM: you can move up to a higher-capacity AGM, but never drop from AGM to EFB . If you'd rather not worry about it, give us the plate or start with a free battery check and we'll tell you the exact Ah, CCA, technology and location.

Signs the Countryman battery needs replacing

- Slow cranking when cold, especially first thing on chilly winter mornings.

- Start-Stop won't engage , or it engages and the engine restarts on its own after a few seconds: the classic first warning on modern Countryman.

- Electronics messages on the central screen, or system warning lights that come and go for no clear reason.

- A battery fitted recently but not registered to the computer : the car still treats it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.

- On the plug-in Cooper S E ALL4 , the car not going to READY or not waking up when you press start even though the traction battery is charged: usually the 12 V auxiliary.

- The powered tailgate struggling to open or close, or the battery (which on many Countryman sits back there, under the boot floor) playing up after the car has been parked a while.

- More than 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts on average 4-6 years and an AGM 5-7 .
