Home › Car batteries › Batteries by brand › MG › HS Need a battery for your MG HS in Málaga? The MG HS is a fairly new SUV, but some units are already starting to need a battery because of city use and Málaga's heat. As MG is a Chinese brand, its battery references are less standardised than European ones, so at Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga) we always identify it by number plate or VIN and change it on the spot, in about 15 minutes and with no appointment . Official Varta Distributor since 1999, free Midtronics check and recycling included. Call us at 952 31 01 18 .

Key facts

- Usual capacity: 60-70 Ah and 600-680 A cranking current on the petrol versions; on the PHEV and Hybrid+ a 12 V auxiliary battery.

- Type: the whole HS range has Start-Stop, so it needs EFB as a minimum; AGM as an upgrade for the heat.

- Chinese brand: less standardised references; we confirm by number plate or VIN, not by generic internet tables.

- Price fitted: conventional 85-140 € , EFB 130-230 € , AGM 180-280 € , high-capacity AGM 280-380 € .

What battery does the MG HS take?
The MG HS reached Spain in 2019 and launched its second generation in 2024, with petrol, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid (Hybrid+) versions. The whole range has Start-Stop, so the battery is never a conventional one : it needs EFB as a minimum. And here is a detail specific to MG: as a Chinese brand , the same version has shipped with different sizes depending on year and market, so the reference must be confirmed by number plate or VIN.
Version Start-Stop Recommended type Indicative capacity / cranking
MG HS 1.5T petrol (1st gen, 2019-2023) with Start-Stop Yes EFB 60-70 Ah / 600-680 A
MG HS 1.5T very well-equipped / Trophy versions Yes EFB or AGM Around 70 Ah / 680 A
MG HS PHEV (plug-in hybrid) Yes 12 V auxiliary (EFB/AGM) — / — (12 V network)
MG HS Hybrid+ (hybrid, 2nd gen from 2024) Yes 12 V auxiliary (EFB/AGM) — / — (12 V network)
MG HS (2nd gen, from 2024) petrol with Start-Stop Yes EFB (AGM as an upgrade) 60-70 Ah / 640-680 A

These are indicative ranges : MG is a Chinese brand and its references are less standardised than European ones, so we won't rely on a generic internet table. What is firm: if your HS has Start-Stop —and the whole range does—, it needs EFB or AGM , never a conventional one. From EFB you can move up to AGM; from AGM never drop back to EFB. And on the PHEV and Hybrid+ , the battery we change is the 12 V auxiliary (the one that powers the ignition and drains the car): the high-voltage traction battery is not touched. Confirm everything with the number plate or VIN.
Golden rule
If your MG HS has Start-Stop —and the whole range does—, it needs EFB or AGM: never a conventional battery.
From EFB you can move up to AGM. From AGM never drop back to EFB. On the hybrids we change the 12 V battery, not the traction one.

How to know which one is yours
Forget hunting for the reference on forums, all the more so with a Chinese brand. Give us the number plate or VIN —through the quote form on this page, via WhatsApp or by calling 952 31 01 18 — and we'll confirm the type, size and final fitted price of your HS battery.
Prefer to get an idea first? Use the "which battery do I need?" test . And if you want to know whether yours will last one more summer, the free battery check in Málaga with Midtronics tells you in 5 minutes and with no obligation: it measures real charge and health, not just a voltage reading.
Three details help fine-tune: year , powertrain (1.5T petrol, PHEV or Hybrid+) and whether the engine switches off on its own at traffic lights (that's Start-Stop, and it confirms you need EFB or AGM).

Signs it's time to replace it
The HS, as a proper city SUV, has a very recognisable failure pattern, almost always linked to urban use:

- After a few days parked it won't start. Classic of the HS used only at weekends or left in the garage during holidays. The electronics keep drawing power at rest and, if the battery is already old, it can't cope.

- Sluggish start in the morning, fine in the afternoon. A sign of a battery low on charge: cold and flat in the morning; after driving, the alternator has just about topped it up.

- Start-Stop no longer kicks in at traffic lights. The HS disables it on its own when the battery isn't holding the required charge level. It's not a system quirk: it's a warning.

- The large touchscreen restarts or loses settings when you switch on.

- The powered tailgate, locks and windows are slow or the car is slow to "wake up" when you open it. …
