The Kia range uses 12 V batteries, and the technology depends on the engine : conventional or EFB in city cars such as the Picanto, EFB or AGM in models with Start-Stop (Ceed, Rio, Sportage), a separate 12 V lead-acid battery (AGM/EFB) in the 48 V mild-hybrids, and a 12 V auxiliary AGM or EFB battery in the HEV and PHEV hybrids such as the Niro or the Sportage. On Kia models with a sensor on the negative terminal, the new battery must be registered in the car's control unit. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999 , we test it free and change it without an appointment, in about 15 minutes . Indicative prices with installation included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

Kia has become a common sight on Málaga's roads, and with the current range full of Start-Stop, 48 V mild-hybrid and hybrid models, changing the battery is no longer "out with the old, in with the new". On many models the new battery must be registered in the control unit , and on hybrids it helps to know that the 12 V battery is auxiliary. We sort it out on the spot, without an appointment , in store (we do not offer home fitting) and with registration included, at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga .

What battery does a Kia use?

Kia shares its technical base with Hyundai, so the logic is the same across the range: Start-Stop with EFB or AGM and a battery sensor on the negative terminal, which means the new battery must be registered in the control unit; 48 V mild-hybrids that, in addition to the 48 V system, carry a 12 V lead-acid battery (AGM/EFB) as their onboard battery; and HEV and PHEV hybrids (Niro, Sportage) with a 12 V auxiliary AGM or EFB battery that powers the electronics but does not crank the engine. Indicative values, all at 12 V :

Model Typical technology Start-Stop Note
Kia Sportage EFB / AGM (12 V auxiliary on HEV and PHEV) Yes Registration in control unit; 48 V mild-hybrid carries a separate 12 V
Kia Ceed EFB / AGM Yes Compact petrol/diesel; registration required
Kia Rio Conventional / EFB Depends on version City car; 48 V mild-hybrid on some, with a separate 12 V
Kia Niro AGM / EFB (12 V auxiliary) — HEV, PHEV and EV: the 12 V does not crank the engine
Kia Picanto Conventional / EFB Depends on version City car; entry versions usually run conventional

Indicative values: they change with the year, the trim and the equipment. "—" = data we confirm with your number plate.

A quick trick to know what you need: look at the negative terminal . If it has a sensor with a connector coming out, your Kia manages charging actively and needs EFB or AGM plus registration of the new battery. And if your car came from the factory with AGM, you must keep AGM: you can go up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB .

Signs it needs changing

- Slow cold starting, especially first thing in the morning.

- Start-Stop no longer engages , or it engages and the engine restarts by itself after a few seconds: the classic first warning on modern Kias.

- Battery warning light or a dashboard message that the Start-Stop conditions are not met.

- The hybrid won't reach READY or ignition even though the traction battery is charged: usually the flat 12 V auxiliary battery (Niro, Sportage HEV/PHEV).

- Battery changed recently but not registered in the control unit : the car still treats it as the old one, charges it poorly and it lasts half as long.

- Over 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts on average 4-6 years and an EFB or AGM 5-7 .
