A Ford battery is 12 V and runs about 50-80 Ah and 500-800 A depending on the model and engine: conventional on older Ka+, EcoSport and Fiesta without Start-Stop, EFB on EcoBoost petrol and EcoBlue diesel with Start-Stop (Fiesta, Focus), and AGM on the Puma and Kuga 48 V mild-hybrid —which carry a separate 12 V AGM alongside the 48 V system— and on the Kuga PHEV, where the 12 V is an auxiliary battery. On Fords with Start-Stop and a battery sensor, the new one must be registered (BMS reset). At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999 , we test it free and replace it with no appointment, in about 15 minutes . Guide prices, fitting included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

Ford is one of the most common cars in Málaga: Fiesta, Focus, Puma and Kuga are on every street and we change batteries for all of them every day. The difference is the generation: an older Ka+ or Fiesta is sorted with a conventional battery in five minutes, but a modern Puma or Kuga has Start-Stop and many are 48 V mild-hybrid, so the new battery has to be registered in the ECU . We do it on the spot, with no appointment , at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga : in-store, no home fitting.

What battery does a Ford take?

Ford uses a battery management system (BMS) on its Start-Stop models: when a new battery is fitted it needs a BMS reset/registration so the car charges it correctly; otherwise it treats it like the old one and it lasts half as long. Indicative figures, all at 12 V :

Model Typical technology Start-Stop Note
Ford Fiesta (1.0 EcoBoost / 1.1 Ti-VCT) EFB (conventional on entry versions without Start-Stop) Yes BMS registration when replaced on Start-Stop
Ford Focus (1.0/1.5 EcoBoost, 1.5 EcoBlue) EFB or AGM Yes Heavy loads → sometimes AGM
Ford Puma (1.0 EcoBoost 48 V mild-hybrid) AGM (12 V, separate from the 48 V system) Yes mHEV: 48 V lithium + 12 V AGM on board
Ford Kuga (1.5 EcoBoost mHEV / 2.5 Duratec PHEV) AGM Yes mHEV 48 V or PHEV → the 12 V is auxiliary
Older Ford Ka+ / EcoSport (without Start-Stop) Conventional No Direct swap, no registration

Indicative figures: they change with the year, trim and equipment. “—” = detail we confirm from your number plate.

Golden rule: never drop from AGM to EFB or from EFB to conventional. If your Puma or Kuga is a mild-hybrid, the 12 V is AGM and sits apart from the 48 V pack; and on a Kuga PHEV the 12 V does not start the engine, it only powers the ignition and electronics.

Signs it's time to change it

- Start-Stop stops kicking in or the engine restarts on its own: the first warning on modern Fords.

- Battery warning light or a "low battery" message on the dash.

- Intermittent glitches on the SYNC screen, the cameras or the audio.

- Battery replaced recently but the BMS wasn't registered : the car charges it badly and it lasts half as long.

- On a mild-hybrid Puma or Kuga, jerks or 48 V system warnings when restarting after Start-Stop.

- Over 4 years old: in Málaga a conventional battery lasts 4-6 years and an EFB/AGM 5-7 .
