A Ford Focus battery is 12 V and runs around 60-70 Ah and 540-760 A depending on the generation and engine: EFB on Mk3 and Mk4 with Start-Stop, both EcoBoost petrol and EcoBlue or TDCi diesel, AGM on the Mk4 EcoBoost 48 V mild-hybrid and the best-equipped versions, and conventional only on some entry-level Mk3 without Start-Stop. On Focus models with Start-Stop the new battery must be registered in the BMS with the diagnostic tool. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999 , we test it free and change it with no appointment, in about 15 minutes . Guide prices with fitting included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

The Ford Focus is one of the most common compacts in Málaga: second-hand Mk3s doing city runs, everyday Mk4 EcoBoosts and EcoBlue diesels for people who cover the A-7 every week. And they don't all take the same battery. On the ones with Start-Stop it isn't enough to fit the new one and close the bonnet: it has to be registered in the BMS so the car recognises it and charges it properly. We do it on the spot, with no appointment , at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga . Everything in the shop : we don't do home fitting.

What battery does the Ford Focus take?

On the Focus what matters is the generation and whether it has Start-Stop. EcoBoost petrol and TDCi (Mk3) or EcoBlue (Mk4) diesel, almost always with Start-Stop, which requires EFB or AGM and registration of the new battery in the BMS . The Mk4 EcoBoost 48 V mild-hybrid carries its 48 V pack separately plus the 12 V on-board battery , which is the one we change here. Guide figures, all at 12 V :

By generation and engine

Version Guide Ah Cranking (A) Technology Start-Stop

How to tell which one your Focus needs

Quick trick: look at the negative terminal . If it has a sensor with a connector coming off it (the BMS sensor), your Focus manages charging actively and needs EFB or AGM plus registration of the new battery. And if your car left the factory with AGM, keep AGM: you can step up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB . The safest thing is to give us the number plate : we'll tell you Ah, cranking, technology and exact dimensions. And if you're not sure whether the problem is the battery or the alternator, start with a free battery check .

Signs the Focus battery needs changing

- Slow cranking when cold, especially first thing in the morning.

- Start-Stop won't engage , or it engages and the engine restarts on its own after a few seconds: the classic first warning on modern Focus models.

- A dashboard message that Start-Stop conditions are not met.

- Intermittent glitches on SYNC, the audio system or the central locking.

- Battery changed recently but not registered in the BMS : the car still treats it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.

- On a Mk4 EcoBoost 48 V mild-hybrid , hybrid system warnings and odd starts even with the 48 V pack in good shape: usually the 12 V on-board battery.

- More than 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts on average 4-6 years and an EFB or AGM 5-7 .
