The Fiat 500 battery is 12 V and is around 44-60 Ah and 360-540 A depending on the version : a conventional 44-50 Ah battery on the classic petrol 500 without Start-Stop, an EFB of 50-60 Ah on the 500 with Start-Stop and on the 500 Hybrid (a 12 V mild-hybrid, with no 48 V system), and a 12 V auxiliary battery on the electric 500e , which cranks no engine at all and therefore has no cranking amps (“—”). At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999 , we test it free of charge and replace it without an appointment, in about 15 minutes . Guideline prices with fitting included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

The Fiat 500 is one of the cars you see parked everywhere in the Centro, the Soho and la Malagueta: small, easy to squeeze into any gap and ideal for getting around Málaga. But that city use, all short trips, is exactly what punishes a battery most, because the alternator rarely gets to recharge it fully. And not every 500 takes the same battery: the classic petrol 500 can run a conventional one, the Start-Stop versions and the 500 Hybrid need an EFB, and the electric 500e carries a 12 V auxiliary battery that cranks nothing but without which the car won't even switch on. We change it at the shop , without an appointment , at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga : we don't offer mobile fitting, and any registration needed plus recycling are included.

Which battery does the Fiat 500 take?

By generation and engine

Indicative figures, all 12 V :

Version Approx. Ah Cranking (A) Technology Start-Stop
Classic 500 1.2 and 0.9 TwinAir petrol (no Start-Stop) 44-50 Ah 360-450 A Conventional No
Classic 500 with Start-Stop (petrol and 1.3 Multijet diesel) 50-60 Ah 450-540 A EFB Yes
500 Hybrid 1.0 (12 V mild-hybrid) 50-60 Ah 450-540 A EFB Yes
500e electric (12 V auxiliary battery) 40-50 Ah — Auxiliary EFB or AGM Not applicable

Guideline figures: they vary with year, trim and equipment. “—” = we confirm it from your number plate.

A quick way to tell what yours needs: look at the negative terminal . If there's a sensor with a connector coming out of it (the battery state sensor), your 500 manages charging actively and needs at least an EFB , plus registration of the new battery with the ECU. If there is no sensor and the car has no Start-Stop, a conventional battery is fine. Remember: a car with Start-Stop never takes a conventional battery, and if it left the factory with AGM it stays AGM.

How to tell which one your 500 needs

Between the classic 500, the 500 Hybrid and the 500e there are far too many combinations to guess. Give us the number plate on WhatsApp or at the shop and we'll tell you the Ah, cranking amps, technology, polarity and exact dimensions, without making up part numbers. On the 500e it also pays to know where the auxiliary battery sits before touching anything. And if you're not sure whether the problem is the battery or the alternator, start with a free battery check .

Signs it's time to replace the 500 battery

- Slow, lazy cranking from cold, especially if the car sits parked on the street for days.

- Start-Stop doesn't engage , or it does and the engine restarts by itself seconds later: the classic first warning on 500s with Start-Stop and on the 500 Hybrid.

- Battery warning light or odd dashboard messages, with the trip computer or the radio resetting.

- On the 500 Hybrid , jolts when pulling away or loss of the 12 V mild-hybrid assistance.

- On the 500e , the car won't switch on or reach “READY” even though the traction battery is charged: it is almost always the 12 V auxiliary battery.

- A recently replaced battery that was never registered with the ECU : the car keeps treating it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.

- More than 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts 4-6 years on average and an EFB or AGM 5-7 .
