Home › Car batteries › Batteries by brand › Cupra
A Cupra uses a 12 V battery, and it is almost always EFB or AGM, never a conventional one : the petrol TSI Leon and Formentor have Start-Stop with a sensor on the negative terminal, so the new battery has to be registered in the ECU; on the eHybrid (PHEV) Formentor and Leon and on the electric Born , the 12 V battery is auxiliary (it powers the ignition and the electronics, it does not crank the engine). At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999 , we test it free and replace it with no appointment, in about 15 minutes . Prices are approximate, fitting included: 85-140 € a conventional battery for reference, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM, which is what a Cupra usually takes.

Cupra is the sporty brand of the VAG group and shares mechanics and electronics with Seat, Volkswagen, Audi and Škoda, so its battery plays in the same league: active charge management, Start-Stop and, in many cases, AGM as standard. There are already plenty of Formentor and Leon on the road in Málaga, plus the odd electric Born, and they all have something in common: when you fit the battery, tightening the terminals is not enough, it has to be registered in the ECU . We do it on the spot, with no appointment , at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga , and the registration is included.

What battery does a Cupra take?

As part of the VAG group, a Cupra manages charging actively and has a sensor on the negative terminal : the new battery has to be registered in the ECU or the car charges it badly and it lasts half as long. On the eHybrid (PHEV) and the electric Born , the 12 V battery is auxiliary : it powers the ignition and the electronics, but it does not crank the combustion engine or move the car (the high-voltage battery does that). Approximate values, all 12 V :

Range type Technology Registration Note
Leon / Formentor petrol (TSI, Start-Stop) EFB or AGM Yes, mandatory Never conventional; AGM if well equipped
Leon / Formentor eHybrid (PHEV) AGM or EFB (12 V auxiliary) Yes, mandatory The 12 V powers ignition, does not crank; CCA not applicable
Born (fully electric) AGM or EFB (12 V auxiliary) Yes, mandatory Service battery; if it drains, the car will not go READY

Approximate values: they change with the year, the trim and the equipment. "—" = detail we confirm with your number plate.

The rule is simple: if your Cupra came from the factory with AGM, you have to keep AGM. You can move up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB to save money, because the car has a level of power draw and cycling that an EFB cannot handle.

How we do it
No appointment · in about 15 minutes

- 01 Give us the number plate

- 02 Free Midtronics test

- 03 Fitting in 15 minutes

- 04 ECU registration and recycling

Signs it's time to replace it

- Slow cold cranking on the petrol Leon and Formentor, especially first thing in the morning.

- Start-Stop stops working , or it kicks in and the engine restarts on its own after a few seconds: that's the classic first warning.

- A dashboard message that the Start-Stop conditions are not met.

- On an eHybrid or the Born, the car won't go "READY" or give ignition even though the traction battery is charged: it's usually the 12 V auxiliary.

- Battery replaced recently but not registered in the ECU : the car treats it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.

- More than 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts on average 4-6 years and an EFB or AGM 5-7 .
