Almost every modern Audi runs a 12 V battery with AGM technology as standard : the TFSI petrol and TDI diesel engines have Start-Stop and a demanding energy-management system, with higher-capacity batteries (60-95 Ah) and, very often, factory-fitted AGM. Because Audi is part of the VAG group , a new battery has to be registered in the ECU , and 48 V mild-hybrids also carry a separate on-board 12 V AGM. At Málaga Baterías (C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga), Official Varta Distributor since 1999 , we test it free and replace it without an appointment, in about 15 minutes . Guide prices with fitting included: 85-140 € conventional, 130-230 € EFB and 180-280 € AGM.

You see a lot of Audi around Málaga: A1 and A3 for everyday driving, high-mileage A4 and Q3, and more and more TFSI e plug-in and 48 V mild-hybrid models. The brand shares its platform and electronics with the rest of the VAG group, so almost all of them carry Start-Stop, a battery sensor on the negative terminal and factory AGM . That means fitting the battery and closing the bonnet is not enough here: it has to be registered in the ECU so the car charges it correctly. We do it on the spot, without an appointment , at C/ La Orotava, 100, 29006 Málaga , and in-store (we do not offer home fitting).

What battery does an Audi take?

Audi is premium VAG : the brand's key trait is that AGM is the usual factory technology and ECU registration is mandatory across practically the whole Start-Stop range. Many models also fit higher-capacity batteries because of their heavy electrical loads. These are the main groups, all 12 V and with indicative values:

Range type Typical technology ECU registration Note
Older small/compact without Start-Stop (A1, earlier generations) Conventional or EFB Usually not needed Less and less common; recent Audis nearly all have energy management
Petrol/diesel with Start-Stop (A3, A4, A5, Q2, Q3…) AGM (sometimes EFB) Mandatory Factory AGM very common; never step down from AGM to EFB
48 V mild-hybrid (recent TFSI/TDI) 12 V AGM (separate from the 48 V one) Mandatory The 48 V unit is a separate battery; the on-board one is still a 12 V AGM
Plug-in "TFSI e" (A3/Q3/Q5 PHEV) Auxiliary 12 V AGM/EFB Mandatory The 12 V powers the ignition and electronics; it does not start the engine (the high-voltage battery does). CCA = —

Indicative values: they change with the year, the trim and the equipment. "—" = a figure we confirm from your number plate.

Quick trick: look at the negative terminal . If it has a sensor with a connector coming out (the battery state sensor), your Audi actively manages charging and needs AGM or EFB plus registration of the new battery in the ECU. And if your car came with AGM from the factory —the most common case on Audi— you must keep AGM: you can step up from EFB to AGM, but never down from AGM to EFB .

How we do it
No appointment · in about 15 minutes

- 01 Give us the number plate

- 02 Free Midtronics test

- 03 Fitting in 15 minutes

- 04 ECU registration and recycling

Signs it's time to change it

- Slow cranking when cold, especially first thing in the morning.

- Start-Stop won't engage , or it engages and the engine restarts by itself after a few seconds: the classic first warning on modern Audis.

- A dashboard message that the Start-Stop conditions aren't met, or an electrical-system warning.

- Battery changed recently but not registered in the ECU : the car still treats it as the old one, charges it badly and it lasts half as long.

- On a mild-hybrid or a plug-in TFSI e, no ignition or READY even though the traction battery is charged: it's usually the auxiliary 12 V.

- More than 4 years old. In Málaga a conventional battery lasts on average 4-6 years and an EFB or AGM 5-7 .
